Host: Welcome to AOL Live. It's not often we can say we have a bona fide icon in our studio, but tonight we are joined by the legendary Janet Jackson, who just released her new C.D. 'All for You' to great public and critical acclaim. Without further ado, let's get to the questions. Janet, I love your new C.D. Who are some of your influences?
Janet Jackson: Marvin Gaye was a great influence in my life. Stevie Wonder. My brothers, of course, my family. It was very eclectic, musically speaking, in my family. There were all different styles, lots of different styles floating around in the family because there were so many kids that did so many different forms. And thank you, by the way, for enjoying the new C.D.
Host: You have the nicest fans, Janet.
Janet Jackson: Oh, cool.
Host: I love your C.D. When can we see you on tour?
Janet Jackson: Well, the tour starts in July, July 5 actually. Our very first show is in Vancouver. From there we come straight into Portland and Seattle and work our way down the west coast and across. So it will be soon.
Host: Great. And because we have so many international fans on, do you know when you're going to be going to Europe yet?
Janet Jackson: November, December is Europe.
Host: Terrific. They'll just have to wait. Of all the songs you have done, which one is your favorite? I know that's always a very hard question for an artist.
Janet Jackson: That is a really difficult question, because I'd have to sit down and really think about it. Right off the bat, I love songs like 'Where Are You Now.' It's really hard. 'Run away' I absolutely love. That makes me feel very, very good when I listen to it.
Host: What do you feel has been your greatest accomplishment so far?
Janet Jackson: My greatest accomplishment?
Host: That's another tough question.
Janet Jackson: You know, it's when someone comes up to you and says to you that you've made a difference in their life. Really. That would be the greatest thing for me ever. Much more rewarding than the record sales, than the awards, any of that. Because that's what I truly set out to do with my music, I hoped to make a difference in people's lives, and hoped to bring happiness, for those on the fence, the kids, leading them down a positive path. Throughout my career, I've gotten a lot of that.
Host: Hey, Janet, first off, I love you. And second off, my question is, "What is it about this business that you absolutely can't stand?"
Janet Jackson: Well, thank you very much. And there's times -- well, there's definitely the jealousy... there's sometimes a lot of back stabbing that goes on. And I really cannot stand that. And smiling in your face, but yet doing other things behind your back. I really hate that.
Host: And I think you should be very flattered, we have a lot of fans saying, "Will you marry me?"
Janet Jackson: Well, I don't think I'll be doing that anytime soon, so I'm going to have to say no.
Host: But very flattering.
Janet Jackson: Yes, that is very flattering. Thank you.
Host: Will you ever do a duet again with your brother Michael?
Janet Jackson: We spoke not that long ago on the phone. We didn't talk about it, but I don't think that we will. Who knows? I like to keep it the way it is, because 'Scream' is very special to me.
Host: It was a wonderful song.
Janet Jackson: Thank you very much. I love the video so much. I still love the video. I like to keep things the way they are.
Host: We can tell you had a lot of fun making that video.
Janet Jackson: Yeah.
Host: A question from Wayne greensberg 1 -- with various other family members having books out, have you ever thought of doing your own autobiography from your point of view?
Janet Jackson: I actually have. And I don't know if I will. If I do, it would be later on in life. There's so much more that I want to do, and there's so much that I want to say. I would rather wait a little longer before writing a book.
Host: Well, you've got plenty of time.
Janet Jackson: Yes.
Host: What is the best part of the creative process -- the recording or the touring?
Janet Jackson: I love them both. The thing about me is, when I'm in the studio, I can't wait to be on tour. When I'm on tour, I can't wait to be back in the studio so that's the way it goes for me. You're always conflicted. You're always craving what you can't have at that moment, and I love it all.
Host: I have questions from kids. They actually can't come to the chats, but they sent in questions earlier and we picked through them.
Janet Jackson: Sure.
Host: Hi, Janet. How does it feel to be the first MTV Icon?
Janet Jackson: It feels awesome. I was completely floored when they approached me and I couldn't believe it. I was so excited. And to have everyone to pay tribute to me in the way they did, it was a very special moment in my life.
Host: Did you like the job that MTV did, by the way?
Janet Jackson: I thought they did an awesome job. So incredible.
Host: Another Kids Only question -- I so love your songs and movies. You are great. I think there's like six exclamation marks. Who has inspired you the most?
Janet Jackson: Well, like I said, Marvin Gaye, my family, Stevie Wonder. As far as actresses and actors, I love Glenn Close, Angela Bassett. I love -- gosh, there's so many people. Al pacino, DeNiro, Kevin Spacey. There's so many great actors. I love Bette Middler. I think she's wonderful. And Goldie Hawn.
Host: How old were you when you started singing?
Janet Jackson: I was, I think, 7. Oh, yes, I was 7.
Host: OK. And did you take -- also a related question -- any dance classes when you were a little girl?
Janet Jackson: No, I never did. That's the one thing I wish I would have done. And I still, to this day, kind of wish that. I never did. I tried to take ballet when I was a baby, and the teacher hit me.
Host: Oh!
Janet Jackson: Because she said I need to get the sway out of my back. I was trying to tell her, that's just the way I'm shaped. And I had a big butt. So she said, "no, your back's not flat enough." And she hit me, and I left and I tried taking it again when I was 14, and I it didn't go well. So I've never taken dance class.
Host: We can't tell, because of your choreography, your dancing... we all assumed you started when you were two.
Janet Jackson: Oh, gosh. Thank you so much.
Host: A little poem for you; roses are red, violates are blue, there's no better singer than you.
Janet Jackson: How sweet.
Host: Janet, I love your music, I want to know -- we actually answered this -- which of your songs is your favorite.
Janet Jackson: Yeah, 'Runaway' always brings a smile to my face. There are definitely more, but every time I hear 'Runaway' it brings a smile to my face. I love what it's saying.
Host: It's a lyrical message.
Janet Jackson: Yes.
Host: Hey Janet, the new album is tight, girlfriend. Anyway, my question to you, how do you prepare mentally and physically before and during your tour?
Janet Jackson: Well, when you get into the mode and tour regiment, when you get into it physically, you can't help but to be there mentally, is the way that I see it. And by putting all the pieces together, you know, of the show, the whole bit, you arrive there mentally. There's no way that you can truly escape it. Physically, it's just as challenging by working out six days a week. And we work out two hours, 2 1/2 hours a day, especially when we're on the road. And then go ahead and do a two-hour show, because it's pretty tough, and it helps to build our endurance. We lift, we box, we'll do an hour of cardio.
Host: Yeah, I heard that was kick boxing?
Janet Jackson: No, not necessarily kick boxing, just boxing.
Host: A lot of your fans are wishing you happy birthday. Was it your birthday yesterday?
Janet Jackson: Yes, it was. Thanks, guys.
Host: Congratulations. They ask you how old you are.
Janet Jackson: I'm 35.
Host: Good for you. Because I wouldn't answer that.
Janet Jackson: No, I'm 35.
Host: "Will this be your last world tour?", asks a fan.
Janet Jackson: You know, I don't know. I really don't. Because I truly felt I was going to call it quits after "Velvet Rope," and I let two of my friends talk me into doing another tour. That's truly what happened. I was not going to tour again. And I can at least say I think it will be maybe the last one for a while. For a little while.
Host: OK. So we all better see you this time around.
Janet Jackson: Well, no, I guess, God willing, there will be a next time. I'm making no sense at this point. If there is a next time, I was going to say. But that's up to you guys, obviously. I would love to see you, but if you can't make it I understand.
Host: OK. A fan is asking, "Has your divorce been hard on you?"
Janet Jackson: In the beginning it was. Devastating. Very painful. But no. Thanks to my friends and just staying focused and spirituality and family, that I'm totally fine with everything.
Host: Not to change the subject, but do you have a computer and do you chat on line?
Janet Jackson: Yes and yes.
Host: What is giving you the most pleasure in your life right now?
Janet Jackson: The most pleasure would be -- oh, gosh. It's more than one thing. It's my friends, my family, having a one-on-one relationship with God. That I believe is extremely important. My music. And my babies, my dogs.
Host: Oh, what kind of dogs do you have?
Janet Jackson: I have a Rottweiler. A boxer. A miniature schnauzer, which I'm getting ready to give to one of my best friends.
Host: And I know that now everybody's going to ask their names.
Janet Jackson: And I have an Australian Shepherd mixed with something else, but I don't know what. She was found.
Host: Can you give us their names?
Janet Jackson: The rot is Riley. The boxer's Dylan. The Australians shepherd is Pockets. And the schnauzer is Madison.
Host: I love you, Janet, you're number one. My question to you is -- do you plan on being in any more movies?
Janet Jackson: Yes, I do, after the tour. And it all depends on how long I extend it for. There was a couple of things I was looking at, but we'll see.
Host: And w-glitter asks -- what would you most want for your birthday?
Janet Jackson: What did I most want for my birthday? Just to enjoy it, which I knew I would. I wasn't looking for presents or anything like that. I just wanted to -- just to have a great day, and I did. It was very relaxing.
Host: Speaking of which, what do you do with your time off?
Janet Jackson: I like spending it with my friends and the dogs. I enjoy games. We love to go to clubs, movies, I like being by the water, by the beach. We go to the islands a lot, my friends and I, when we have time off. We just came from there today. It was like a working vacation.
Host: Yeah, you need a vacation before the tour.
Janet Jackson: Yeah. But it still wasn't a true, true vacation. It was still a working one. But that's better than no vacation at all, though.
Host: This fan asks -- what is the weirdest thing you've ever heard about yourself?
Janet Jackson: I don't know. You know what? I really don't hear that much about myself. I'm sure they -- you guys probably hear more than I do, because I don't really -- my friends don't bring stuff like that to me. I don't hear anything for the most part. Unless a journalist tells me something. It hasn't been anything really weird.
Host: You're lucky.
Janet Jackson: Yeah.
Host: Fans are asking when your tour tickets will go on sale. Do you know?
Janet Jackson: Some of them are already on sale in different cities.
Host: Is your family supportive of your career?
Janet Jackson: Very much so. Yes.
Host: How is the single life? Love you.
Janet Jackson: It's great. It's been wonderful. You know, it's really weird, because you think you can't spend that time alone or be by yourself, and you're so used to being with someone. And I just absolutely love it.
Host: And here's a related question -- do you ever want to have children some day?
Janet Jackson: You know what? I never thought I did. And now that I'm not with anyone, it's crossed my mind. It's the weirdest thing, right?
Host: Work on your timing there.
Janet Jackson: (Laughing) I know, right. I've got it kind of the wrong way, or at least the way it used to be. But yeah, I have thought about it, and it's something that -- I don't know. Who knows? If it's God's plan for me, then yes. Maybe just one, at the most two. But we'll see.
Host: What should we expect from the concert in terms of songs and performance? Any hints you can give us?
Janet Jackson: Well, sure, there are lots of hints I can give you, but I don't think I want to. Because it's just I don't want you to come there and expect one thing, and then you get another. We just enjoy putting on the show and try to make it fun, and hopefully enjoyable for you guys. So hopefully you'll like it. It's a completely different show than "Velvet Rope," though.
Host: OK. That tantilizes us! Janet. How did you come up with the idea for 'Son of a Gun'? Of course, that's a song that you sing with Carly Simon.
Janet Jackson: Right. Actually, that wasn't supposed to be a duet. Carly wanted to sing on it, after she heard it. I needed her approval, because I used her sample from the song 'You're So Vain.' She wanted to be a part of it. She kind of wanted to write just a few lines. And then wound up writing what seemed to be a whole song. And it was so cool the way she did it, because it's like spoken word. That was an idea that originally came about by jamming, I think using her sample with the song, which I thought was a really cool idea. And after Carly recorded all of her stuff, we put the two together, and it's really neat to me because it sounds kind of abstract. I like it, the song.
Host: Yeah. I love the two of your voices together. They really work well together.
Janet Jackson: Thank you.
Host: Here's another Kids Only question -- Amanda asks, "When you're making the video "All for You," did you feel uncomfortable dancing with no shoes on?"
Janet Jackson: Yes, I did. It was the funkiest thing I've ever done before. It was so stank. And when you dance, I mean, you're so used to your feet being covered completely. So you start to feel all this air between your toes, then you realize it's really cool because your feet are sweating a little bit and they're dirty. It was fun, but we were all talking about how stank it was and how weird it felt to dance with no shoes on.
Host: So that was a good question.
Janet Jackson: Yeah.
Host: What would be the best suggestion or advice for someone who is just starting in the business?
Janet Jackson: The best advice?
Host: A lot of your fans are asking this.
Janet Jackson: They just have to be really careful not to be taken in any sort of way. There's a lot of talent out there and a lot of people know that the kids are so hungry just to create, so they get taken advantage of a lot of times. And also to, more so than anything, stay focused. Don't ever forget what your goal, your dream is, and stay focused and stay on that path, because there are a lot of things that truly can deter you, such as drugs. And you'll completely lose sight of everything, and lose yourself even. And everything and everyone around you. So stay focused.
Host: Good advice. A lot of people asking -- when will you be in Chicago? When will you be in Texas?
Janet Jackson: You know, I don't know the actual dates, but this year we're going to be in those places.
Host: And we'll be posting all your tour dates, so come back and get them here, too. What is your favorite video that you've done?
Janet Jackson: Oh, gosh. I love 'If.' I love 'Rhythm Nation.' I love 'Black Cat.'
Host: Do you know what is going to be the next single off the album?
Janet Jackson: 'Someone to Call My Lover.'
Host: Oh, we have so many fans online. Are you going to be doing a big choreographed tour?
Janet Jackson: Well, yes, it will definitely be choreographed, for sure.
Host: Do you like Britney Spears?
Janet Jackson: Yes, I do.
Host: Is it hard finding a boyfriend, considering every guy knows your status?
Janet Jackson: My friends say that guys are kind of -- kind of -- well, no, I shouldn't use that word. They say that they're kind of afraid to approach me, because of being in the entertainment business, being an entertainer. So it makes them -- it makes it very difficult for them to ask me out. If that answers your question.
Host: Yes. We've heard that from, actually, a lot of celebrities that we've interviewed. What artist of today do you admire?
Janet Jackson: I think Destiny's Child is wonderful. I think Pink is wonderful. I think Jill Scott. Indiari is absolutely wonderful. I love a lot of music that's more European or foreign stuff, too. Artists that I really enjoy listening to.
Host: How do you find your new music?
Janet Jackson: Oh, it's weird. Sometimes I find it just by going into a restaurant and somewhere in Europe, and hearing them play something. Over the system. There are other times when my friends will introduce me to something. Or just listening to the radio while in Europe and wanting to find out who the artist is and get the work. I think Craig David is really cool, too.
Host: He's got an amazing voice.
Janet Jackson: Mm-hmm.
Host: Do you think you'll ever do a duet with anybody? Who would you most like to do one with?
Janet Jackson: I'm a very big fan of a Brazilian artist, Cesaria --
Host: Spell that for us?
Janet Jackson: Cesaria Evora.
Host: Thank you.
Janet Jackson: And Jung Chin Lou, who is a Tibetan artist who is absolutely wonderful.
Host: What was it like being raised a Jackson? I don't quite know what they mean by that question, but --
Janet Jackson: What was it like? There were times where it was fun. There were times when it was really difficult. It was -- gosh. It was different, at times. But you know, I wouldn't trade it for the world. It was hard at times.
Host: What do you think of the pop princesses like Britney, Christina Aguilera,
Janet Jackson: I think they're talented. I don't like the fact that they get such a -- I don't like when other artists bash one another. I've never liked that. And I see no point in it. If you really don't appreciate someone's work, then just don't say anything, just talk about someone that you do enjoy. And I think they're very talented. And I think it's sad that they get such a bad rap.
Host: I agree. They've all chatted with us, and they're all delightful people. On your new album, who says the chant in "Son of a Gun"? Is it Jimmy Jam?
Janet Jackson: The chant? Do you mean like the rap?
Host: I think that's what they mean.
Janet Jackson: No, it's me.
Host: She's multitalented, folks.
Janet Jackson: I don't call it a rap, though. It's just like talking in rhythm is the way that I see it. I'm not a rapper.
Host: Talking in rhythm.
Janet Jackson: Yeah. Which I guess that's what rap really is, but I don't consider myself a rapper at all.
Host: Well, unfortunately, we're out of time. But before we go, is there anything you want to say to your fans?
Janet Jackson: Just thank you so much for supporting me throughout my entire career, and through all the ups and downs that have happened in my life. I'm very grateful to have such loving fans. And I really thank you for being there for me, always.
Host: And Janet, on behalf of all of us here at AOL Live and all of your fans signed on now from around the world, thank you so much for joining us. And we can't wait to see you in tour.
Janet Jackson: Thank you very much, you guys.
Host: Thanks, and bye-bye.
